Café sans frontières

« À l’automne 2020, en résidence au centre Adélard à Frelighsburg, pendant la pandémie, j’ai débuté la documentation d’une courte section de frontière qui longe le 45e parallèle, entre les lacs Memphrémagog et Champlain, située en territoire traditionnel non cédé des Abénakis. Ici la frontière est arbitraire, ne s’annonce pas, s’affiche peu, elle y est souvent peu ou pas visible: chemins devenus cul-de-sac, champs de soya, cours arrière de résidents, forêts et vergers, cours d’eau indisciplinés. On avance à tâtons pour la trouver, avec un étrange sentiment de culpabilité, cherchant nerveusement les signes discrets du changement de pays. À chaque retour à l’atelier, je devais m’empresser de tracer un carré noir sur la photographie, pour me rappeler où était la frontière, tel un Post-it tridimensionnel. Ce geste simple et précis – répétitif et administratif – transforme accidentellement, mais significativement le document. L’écran sanitaire, politique, social et humanitaire se dresse stoïque dans le paysage tranquille. Comment aurons-nous changé lorsque la frontière ouvrira à nouveau?. » - Michel Huneault

Michel Huneault vit et travaille à Montréal. Sa démarche artistique conjugue la photographie documentaire et les arts visuels. En plus de l’image fixe, il recourt à des éléments immersifs, avec un parti pris humaniste et intimiste. Huneault s’intéresse au développement, aux traumatismes, à la migration ainsi qu’à d’autres réalités géographiques complexes. Ses projets se construisent en plusieurs chapitres, s’imbriquent sur plusieurs années et sont diffusés sur des plateformes complémentaires, des médias traditionnels aux espaces d’art contemporain. Son travail a notamment été présenté au Japon, aux États-Unis, au Canada et en Suisse.

“While doing an artist residency at the Adélard centre in Frelighsburg in the fall of 2020, I began documenting a short section of the border along the 45th parallel, between Lake Memphremagog and Lake Champlain on the traditional and unceded territory of the Abenaki people. The border in the area is arbitrary, discreet, and often unmarked. It can be completely invisible, hidden among culs-de-sac, soybean fields, residential backyards, forests, orchards, and undisciplined rivers. You feel your way along with a strange sense of guilt, nervously searching for subtle signs indicating a change of country. Each time I went back to my studio, I marked a black square on the photos, like a three-dimensional Post-it, to remind myself where the border was. This simple, precise act—repetitive and clerical—accidentally but significantly transformed the image. The sanitary, political, social, and humanitarian screen stood stoically in the calm, natural landscape. When the border reopens, how will we have changed?” - Michel Huneault

Michel Huneault lives and works in Montreal. His artistic approach combines documentary photography and the visual arts. In addition to the still image, he uses immersive elements, with a humanist and intimate bias. Huneault is interested in development, trauma, migration and other complex geographical realities. His projects are built in several chapters, overlap over several years and are shown on complementary platforms, from traditional media to contemporary art spaces. His work has been shown in Japan, the United States, Canada and Switzerland, among others.
